Skills Proficiency Awards in Basic Housekeeping Services

These courses aim to improve the level of general skills and Basic Housekeeping Services provided by staff. It provides a broad introduction to essential practical skills for those undergoing training or are employed in the housekeeping area of hospitals, hotels, guesthouses, etc.

There are two related levels:

  • Skills Foundation Certificate 3528
  • Skills Proficiency Certificate 3529

Training is provided by highly skilled professional lecturers who have excellent knowledge and many years of experience in the industry.

We award certificates for gaining and showing skills. The candidates should achieve the Skills Foundation Certificate before attempting the Skills Proficiency Certificate.

The course includes the training and assessment for both levels. It requires 32 hours of training and 2 hours for assessment.

Skills Foundation Certificate

The aim of this module is to introduce the candidate to:

Knowledge Components:

  • Safe working within their own area of work.
  • The prevention of hazards.
  • Basic cleaning techniques and correct use of chemicals.
  • Basic use of cleaning equipment.
  • Working with other people in a service environment.

Practical competence; the candidate must be able to do the following:

  • Maintain own health and safety; personal cleanliness, personal presentation and wearing of protective clothing.
  • Observe all workplace safety procedures.
  • Identify potential hazards in the workplace.
  • Locate and identify various types of fire fighting equipment and state their uses.
  • Correctly handle and store substances, e.g. cleaning chemicals.
  • Present self positively and in accordance with the establishment’s standards.
  • Use appropriate security procedures with regard to equipment and materials.
  • Select appropriate cleaning procedures for a variety of situations.
  • Clean various areas using appropriate methods and materials.
  • Know the features and use of different cleaning equipment types and cleaning chemicals.
  • Be able to identify cross contamination hazards.

Skills Proficiency Certificate

The aim of this module is to enable the candidate to:

Knowledge Components:

  • Maintain safe working conditions.
  • Adopt safe procedures for themselves and others.
  • Carry out correct cleaning procedures.
  • Organise and carry out cleaning activities effectively
  • .

  • Interact with customers when providing services.

Practical competence; the candidate must be able to do the following:

  • Maintain health and safety; select and use protective clothing and safety equipment for specific tasks.
  • Carry out safe working practices to prevent hazards and to ensure the safety of working personnel and members of the public.
  • Inspect for faults, set up and safely use equipment.
  • Correctly handle and store substances, e.g. cleaning chemicals.
  • Apply establishment emergency procedures.
  • Carry out basic first aid procedures.
  • Develop skills required for dealing with different types of customer.
  • Use appropriate security procedures with regard to guests’ belongings.
  • Report incidents in accordance with establishment procedures.
  • Perform Housekeeping Services; organise cleaning tasks effectively.
  • Clean and prepare various areas and fittings using appropriate methods and materials.
  • Know the importance of working to good standards.
  • Liaise with other departments when required.
