Review: Rainbow Nation Celebration Pop-Up Restaurant Event

25 September 2015

Under the African sky…

The Hospitality Management students welcomed the Heritage Day celebrations with an event honoring South African Heritage with truly South African food and entertainment.

Tables were set, ouside on the patio, using traditional South African decor.  The welcoming drinks were home-made Ginger Beer and Traditional Beer (“Umqombothi”) served with gorgeous snacks as you walked in.

Umqombothi is brewed following traditional customs and these vary slightly between regions. The recipe is often passed down through the generations. The beer is traditionally prepared over a fire outside of the house. It then passively cools to ambient temperatures outside the house.

The Chef-lecturers and Professional Cookery students created lip-smacking Mini Vetkoek (filled with savoury Mince) as a Canapé and for Starter-course a Biltong, Strawberry & Rocket Salad, Vinaigrette dressing. Palate cleanser was an interesting twist on the traditional sorbet with an Apple & Pear Snow was served. The Main Course was a selection of hearty Potjie-style dishes such as Cream Chicken Potjie / Game and Beer Potjie, served with Samp with Beans and Rice.  The Dessert Course was representative of the South-African “sweet tooth” with a compilation of Amarula Panna Cotta, Mini Milk Tart Shooter & home-made Koeksister.

Entertainment was also in abundance!  Traditional dancers and a spoken-word artist provided the backdrop for the relaxed atmosphere.

The students selected Tshwane Child Welfare as their charity of choice. The children from Tshwane Child Welfare was invited to attend the Pop-Up Restaurant and prepared a song-and-dance as a ‘thank you’ for the evening as well.
