Your career is not what brings home your pay cheque, your career is what you were put on earth for to do with such passion and intensity that it becomes spiritual in calling.―  Vincent van Gogh

Liza Strauss strongly believes that one can NEVER stop learning. Since she can remember Liza wanted to be a Chef which caused her to already in High School start experiencing what the world of culinary studies was all about through entering cooking competitions and working voluntarily over weekends. In 2008 she completed her B.Tech in Hospitality Management (Cum Laude) at the Central University of Technology (CUT) in Free State.

She worked at Le Quartier Francais and The Cape Grace Hotel and was then appointed as a Lecturer’s Assistant at the Central University of Technology (CUT) from 2007-2009. She was also working as a part-time Chef for the Upper Crust Catering Company; working specifically after hours or over weekends to stay in touch with the Industry.

In 2009 she was promoted to Junior Chef for Culinary Studies at CUT and in 2013 as Head Chef of the CUT Hotel School. During periods of annual leave she worked for a few months in the industry to stay on top of current trends through establishments like La Motte Wine Estate’s Pierneef Restaurant.

Liza realized that she’d found her career choice and place in the Hospitality Education Industry the first day she stood before a class of anxious-to-learn students. She is committed to help students in developing their practical skills and brainpower, by encouraging them to think further. Liza married her husband in 2012 and then relocated to Cape Town where she worked as Sous Chef at Roxanne Floquet Cake Design as well as Edward Nathan Sonneburgs before starting up the Diploma in Patisserie for the International Hotel School at their Cape Town campus.

She is currently in the process of completing her Masters Degree in Higher Education Studies (M.A.HES) through the University of the Free State, which specifically focus on chef graduates in the world of work.

Apart from cooking, Liza loves sport and completed her first Comrades Marathon in 2012. She is also a qualified Pilates Instructor and loves to be active and to stay fit. Her next challenge is to make her childhood dream come true which is to obtain her (PPL) Pilot License. Liza believes that life should be lived to the fullest and that one should always challenge yourself to become better.

As she states: “I have a deep passion for my career, I embrace life to the fullest, I am a hard worker and I know where I am heading. I also know that I am where I am by God’s grace and for that I am truly thankful.
