A few words from the principal

Dear friends of CHS, colleagues and students

Ten years ago, on Monday, 3 January 2001, CHS opened its doors for the first time. Many things have changed over the years – staff has come and gone, we moved to new premises, uniforms changed, but I am proud to say that the CHS vision and mission have remained untouched. We shall never stop to provide our students with the best possible practical and academic skills so that they will be properly prepared for the industry and will therefore be respected by fellow workers and employers.

We shall continue to strive to be the preferred provider of Hospitality Education, Training and Development in South Africa and looking at the steady stream of applications for 2011, I am confident that CHS is still on track.

2010 is certainly going to be a roller coaster year keeping in mind that our students’ and management’s involvement in the World Cup, leaves us with less time than usual.  However, judging by the excitement of our students having the opportunity of a lifetime to participate in a global event puts my mind at ease. They are all very aware of the fact that it is a rare opportunity and a privilege to be involved in one of the biggest sport events in the world.

This year’s first year students have already proofed that they have the potential to be the strongest group in our ten years of existence. We trust that they will continue to work diligently and remain enthusiastic for the remainder of their stay at CHS. It will not always by easy, (ask the second years!) but please persevere, support and motivate each other and talk to the seniors when you need advice.

Three new people joined the CHS family in the beginning of the year. A warm welcome to Lientjie Luwes and Marnus du Toit who are heading up the Marketing Department, and Segofala Masobela, the Culinary Assistant.  They quickly settled in and after only three short months it is hard to imagine that they have not been with CHS for a long time.

Congratulations to all the students on receiving their Diplomas in March this year. Those of you that attended the graduation evening will know that the focus of my speech was all about communication.  Proper communication is the key to success – and lack thereof normally leads to chaos. Wars have been started by misinterpretation of messages.

I come from the same premise as Sidney J Harris who said:

“The two words 'information' and 'communication' are often used interchangeably, but they signify quite different things. Information is giving out; communication is getting through”

Or in the words of William Shakespeare:

“Hear the meaning within the word.”

I trust that 2010 will be a blessed year for all!

Capital Hotel School greetings.
