Gourmet Wors 2014

3 September 2014

A seasoned chef will tell you that it takes the surgical precision of a steady hand to prepare a quality “wors”. Yes, the gauntlet has been thrown down and the search for the best “Gourmet Wors” was taking place on 3 September.

Capital Hotel School and Training Academy challenged fellow hospitality training establishments to the ultimate “wors-off” on 3 September 2014 at the Groenkloof Nature Reserve.

Establishments which accepted the challenge was Chefs Training & Innovation Academy (CTIA), HTA School of Culinary Art, Legend Hotel School, Capsicum, Sondela Academy, and of course the hosts The Capital Hotel School and Training Academy (CHS).

It was a spectacular start to Spring with competitors, supporters, judges and sponsors participating in the festivities.  Stalls were adorned with various themed decorations and each team brought their own “flavour” to the day.

The list of sponsors and suppliers was incredible this year and we would like to thank everyone for coming to the (wors) party:

  • Uitkyk (co-host)
  • Ignite Charcoal
  • Prenox
  • Culinary Equipment Studio
  • Manhattan Hotel
  • Ecolab
  • Royal Elephant Hotel and Conference Centre
  • WL Cole
  • Sharp Edge (Sandton)
  • Makro Silverlakes

With an equally impressive list of industry experts as judges:

  • Ignite Charcoal – Ashley Chetty
  • Culinary Equipment Studio – Wehrner Gutstadt
  • Food Blogger extraordinaire – Marlise Scheepers
  • Manhattan Hotel – Chef Johannes More
  • Kream restaurant – Chef Spencer Sykes

Marlise Scheepers (picture above, left with Ingrid Johnson from Prenox), one of our esteemed judges, participated in the Gourmet Wors Competition for the first time this year and was pleasantly surprised with the participation and caliber of wors produced.  Marlise Scheepers, also known as “Sjef Snoekie” by her fans and followers, keeps a colourful Blog about her culinary experiences and shared the day’s happenings with all to enjoy.

As the flames were stoked the wors was prepared, stuffed, tasted by the judges and finally cooked to present as a final product.

Part of the celebration is allowing culinary training establishments to come together and socialise with their fellow culinary students,

But after all the fun and games there is the serious business of “wors” – after all the teams presented their masterpieces a winner had to be selected.

And as expected, the best wors came from the bushveld!  Congratulations to Sondela Academy for walking away with this year’s Gourmet Wors title.  We look forward to hosting you all next year!

Diarise the date now and incorporate it into your 2015 year planner:
