InfoChef, South Africa’s premier culinary conference has been an important fixture on South Africa’s hospitality calendar for over 20 years. Bringing together both young and experienced chefs from the across the country, InfoChef is an important platform for networking, discussions, culinary demonstrations and competition.  This year was no different.

On Wednesday, 1 October 2014, the second African Culinary Cup competition took place during the Infochef conference.  CHS was invited to participate in the “Local Host” competition which took part during the Culinary Cup.  Participants in the “Local Host” competition was tasked with the setting and decoration as well as the service of the table for guests attending the competition luncheon.

Miss Van Zyl (Food and Beverage lecturer), with Miss Lodewyks (Front of House lecturer), assisted the group of students participating in the service competition.

Miss Van Zyl commented,

It doesn’t matter if the service part was not perfect on the day, the most important thing was to be friendly and keep smiling – and that’s exactly what everyone did.  We are so proud of them.

With the expert guidance, as provided by CHS lecturers, and a genuine smile we managed to secure first place at the Gala Dinner hosted by SACA to announce the winners of the African Culinary Cup competition.  Congrats to the service team and Miss Van Zyl!

But the excitement did not stop there!

On Thursday, 2 October 2014, the Infochef Africa conference took place and a group of CHS representatives went to attend the informative talks and demonstrations with Chef Jooste, Miss Van Zyl and Miss Lodewyks.

The programme was packed to the max with all things culinary and chef related.  As per tradition, at the completion of the day’s programme “training establishments” (chef schools) are challenged to participate in the “skills challenge” whereby various chef-related skills are tested.  CHS accepted the challenge and won!  First place was awarded to us for the successful completion of three challenges (grating, identifying spices and whisking).

During the second day of Infochef, Thursday 2 October 2014, the programme included the McCain Tribute to Good Taste competition which saw our own Karabo (Professional Cookery student) participating in the student-category.  Well done Karabo, you made us proud for participating.

Thank you to all the CHS students for participating in the challenges and attending the Infochef conference.  We look forward to the 2015 conference!
